After I suffered a heart attack on July 5th, my cardiologist prescribed Cardiac Rehab. My insurance company surprisingly agreed to pay for 36 1-hour sessions. I started these last week.

I did not know what to expect from cardiac rehab; I knew nothing about it. As it turns out, cardiac rehab is very similar to personal training, only with a few glaring differences.

When I arrive for cardiac rehab, I attach a portable EKG monitor to my body. After I complete this, the nurse takes my blood pressure.

A personal trainer would show me the location of the trash cans in preparation for when I would need to vomit.

During cardiac rehab, the nurse makes sure I am comfortable and checks in with me often to make sure I am following the plan. A personal trainer yells and screams about not working hard enough.

At cardiac rehab, the nurse uses gentle words and phrases as encouragement. My personal trainer used words such as weak, pathetic, pitiful, and miserable to describe the effort I put forth just before I am bent over the aforementioned trash can.

In cardiac rehab, the nurse offers me water halfway through. My personal trainer offers to have everyone look and applaud while I am praying to the trash can.

While the cardiac rehab nurse relishes in my improvement, the personal trainer took pride in making me have to use the trash can.

When the cardiac rehab session is over, the nurse again takes my blood pressure, asks how I’m doing, and lets me know she is looking forward to seeing me for our next appointment. My personal trainer used to tell me she hoped I would not waste her time again when we next met.

In two weeks, I see an orthopedic surgeon who uses the same facility for his physical therapy sessions.
